〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉
CHARACTER NAME: Alphonse Elric
CHARACTER AGE: 13 mentally and physically, 17 chronologically
SERIES: Fullmetal Alchemist (2003 Anime)
CHRONOLOGY: Mid-Conqueror of Shamballa, before he’s pulled off the suit of armour going through the portal
BACKGROUND:
Al’s personal history and CoS
PERSONALITY:
Al is a relatively simple kid without his memories of being a suit of armour; much less complicated by grey-morality, guilt and regret. To put it plainly, Al is good. Al is good and altruistic and he believes that the rest if the world is the same way. Despite being dealt a pretty terrible deck in the game of life at a very young age, Al has always had people to look out for him and catch him when he falls, leading him to believe that is how the world operates; people looking out for each other and doing good. This has a number of reflections in his personality.
For one, he’s developed a strong sense of right and wrong, which categorizes the two based on whether or not people get hurt. It is truly distressing to Alphonse to see others in pain, whether or not that other is human or not, with a particular soft spot for children and cats. He will often go out of his way to relieve the problems of others, however he can. And he never expects anything in return, not even a thank you. For him, helping others is truly intrinsically rewarding. Another symptom of his positive disposition is that he is incredibly optimistic. It is his belief that things will always turn out for the best as long as he makes some effort towards that. This is true even in the face of overwhelming opposition.
Perhaps most important to mention, however, is that this good-nature leads Al to really strongly believe in others. He believes in and trusts people to the extent that he may sometimes be considered naïve or gullible for doing so. Even if there is strong evidence that he shouldn’t Al will almost always give people the benefit of the doubt, take their word, give them second chances and generally just assume the best of them. This trust in people applies double fold for those in positions of authority; it’s difficult for him to recognize they may abuse their power. As such he will usually implicitly trust any older authority figure, whether it’s a nurse, military officer or older sibling.
--Not that he is not also willing to disobey authority figures; he may believe they are good and have his best interests in heart, but if he’s willing to do different if he thinks differently. A recently example in his history being that many adults in his life discouraged Al from searching for his brother, and though he believes they were looking out for him, he did so anyways, believing also that they are wrong.
This choice was, of course, also strongly driven by the importance Alphonse places on family. As mentioned previously, Al has always had people to look out for him; first his mother, then Aunt Pinako, their teacher and finally his brother. Family has always been instrumental in Al feeling safe and loved in the world. At this point, the only blood-relation he has left being his older brother, Edward. Even with Pinako and Izumi the two of the relied very heavily on each other following their mother’s death and though they were always close, they became inseparable. Al will do nearly anything in the world to protect his brother and their relationship, even things he would think differently of doing were it any other person; family is one of the few areas in which he begins to see grey areas in morality.
Like his brother, Al is far more intelligent than a kid his age really has any right to be, and very curious. Science has always intrigued him and when given the chance to learn Al is eager to do so, driven simply by a love of knowledge. When given the resources he also learns incredibly quickly and easily. Even when only self-taught, Alphonse showed remarkable skill in alchemy. Later on, when given proper instruction Al was able to learn in only five months the alchemy that takes some adults years to learn.
But as much as he is like his brother in that way, Al has always been sort of an inverse response to Ed, in others. For all their similarities, Al is tempered by an everyday maturity that Ed doesn’t always have. They can’t both be the impulsive and reckless one after all, so Al became sensible one. He’s an incredibly patient person, it takes a lot of discouragement to get him frustrated, a lot of betrayal to make him distrust, and a lot of anger to make him loose his temper. Generally, those just aren’t things that happen. He’s very in control of himself, and tends to listen to his emotions without letting them guide him; a voice of reason to his often dramatic brother.

POWER:
Alchemy (Canon)
Simply put, alchemy is the ability to transform (or transmute) an object in someway using a flow of energy. It has wide ranging uses such as changing water temperature, repairing broken structures, binding souls and soul fragments to objects, and more. This ability is however limited by the laws of nature, specifically the laws of equivalent exchange which state conservation of mass and natural providence. These two caveats mean that the mass of an object must remain the same in the before and after states of a transmute object, and an object can only be changed from one thing to another if the properties of the result exist in the materials. Ex: 1 gram of coal can become 1 gram of diamond, because the weight is the same and both substances are made of carbon.
Al must be touching the thing he wants to transmute, and has to use a transmutation circle to assist him.
Astral/Soul Projection (non-canon)
This is the ability to have the soul leave the body and exist in an incorporeal, immaterial state. In this state Al’s soul can observe, but not interact with, the physical world. The inability to interact means that his soul can drift through walls, float, etc. as he also cannot interact with the laws of nature. In this state he cannot use his other powers and his physical body is immobile. Additionally, he can only project for very short periods at a time, a few minutes, though with practice he may extend this time a bit.
